The Nigerian National Anthem and Pledge

Flag of Nigeria

This post contains the two stanzas of the Nigerian National Anthem and the Pledge.

After independence on October 1 in 1960, Nigeria adopted a National Anthem. The first anthem that was used is “Nigerian We Hail Thee” before it was relinquished in 1978.

The current Nigerian National Anthem is Arise, O Compatriots and has two verses. Although, the second stanza is rarely sang, the first stanza is sang in every occasion.

This national anthem was composed by Late Pa Benedict Odiase when he was the director of the Nigerian Police Force.

Nigerian National Anthem

Arise, O compatriots

Nigeria’s call obey

To serve our fatherland

With love and strength and faith

The labor of our heroes past

Shall never be in vain

To serve with heart and might

One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity.

Second Stanza of the National Anthem

O God of creation

Direct our noble cause

Guide our leaders right

Help our youth and truth to know

In love and honesty to grow

And living just and true

Great lofty heights attain

To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.

The Nigerian National Pledge

I pledge to Nigeria my country

To be faithful, loyal, and honest

To serve Nigeria with all my strength

To defend her unity

And uphold her honor and glory

So help me God.
